In this second part of Romans 7 Paul begins by defending the law as good, holy and righteous v12. Demonstrating that it was sin in us that was responsible for our death, not the law. Then a clear understanding that v14-25 refer not to Paul or new testament believers but someone hopelessly struggling in their relationship with the law, helps draw out the fact that whilst the law is good it cannot save us. The law cannot bring life and yet because of sin we need saving. The law then is vital in showing us the utter sinfulness of sin v13, the gravity of our plight and rebellion against God. But whist the law highlights our condition we are still desperately in need of a saviour… and so we are left prepared; trusting the goodness of God’s law but also ready for Romans chapter 8 and life lived in the power of the Holy Spirit – normative Christianity.
