In this passage Jesus meets with two unknown, lost and hurting disciples on the road to Emmaus. This is the very first story in Luke’s Gospel where Jesus appears after his death, and he surprises us with his choice of place and people. No one is too insignificant for him – he cares deeply and he listens with every part of his being. Yet he is beautifully intolerant and doesn’t want us to remain stuck in our pain. He sets a fire in our hearts and he opens our eyes – he is just waiting for us to invite him in.
