God's gift of lament

In psalm 13 we hear David's cry of pain to God. He turns to God in his despair, brings his complaint to Him and begins to ask God bold prayers to change his situation. As David laments and processes his suffering with God, he moves from despair to trusting in Him once again. Today in our despair and pain, God invites us to receive his gift of lament as He enters into our struggles with us. We look to Jesus our great high priest who loves us and died for us and in life's pain, we can boldly approach Him to receive help at our greatest time of need.

Psalm 13 (Listen)

How Long, O Lord?

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

13:1   How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
    How long will you hide your face from me?
  How long must I take counsel in my soul
    and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
  How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
  Consider and answer me, O LORD my God;
    light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
  lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
    lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
  But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
    my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
  I will sing to the LORD,
    because he has dealt bountifully with me.
